Moving fragile or delicate things may feel risky. However, with the right packing strategy, you can be in control. Things like keepsakes, glasses, mirrors, and dishes require more than a quick label and wrap. You will need to pack them with care to ensure they are protected.

Rushing things while packing fragile belongings is a costly mistake. This is why most people hire movers, like Molloy Moving. Professional movers believe that good results come from planning, packing, and organizing everything. Here are the expert techniques they often use when packing fragile things:

Start With a Good Packing Plan

Consider fragile things by shape, size, and weight before you open any box. Keep heavy things away from glasses. Plus, don’t place sharp edges near collectibles that are soft. Keeping this in mind ensures that you avoid pressure points and pick the right boxes.

Use a strong box that maintains its shape when pressed. Weak boxes don’t just hold items together. They also bend during lifting. For your ceramics, dishes, and glasses, opt for smaller boxes. They often stay lighter.

Build a Soft Landing Inside Every Box

Safe boxes start with thick base layers. Line the boxes’ bottom with foam, crumpled packing paper, or towels before you add anything breakable. Such layers absorb shock when boxes ride over bumps or touch the floor.

Remember to wrap every piece of item on its own, even when they seem strong enough to share padding. Soft cloth will fill odd spaces, and paper will protect surfaces. The key goal is to stop movement.

Pack by Shape, Not by Room

Most people pack their fragile things by room. However, they forget that shape matters even more. Picture frames, tall glasses, curved bowls, and flat plates all require different support. When things of similar shape stay together, they don’t just leave fewer risky gaps. They also fit better.

Rather than stacking your plates, consider putting them on their edges. Moreover, stand mirrors and frame pictures upright with a cardboard on each side. For stemware, consider supporting the stem and the bowl separately. This is important simply because stems usually break first.

Protect Awkward and Valuable Pieces

Some items require custom care. That is because they can’t fit in a normal box. Sculptures, lampshades, antiques, and vases have weak points, which you can easily miss. So, check handles, rims, and corners before wrapping them.

For a hollow item, put soft paper inside. Do so without forcing it. For a large mirror or glass, consider taping an X across its surface. This will help to hold pieces together in the case of damage.

Label Clearly and Load With Intention

Labeling your things comes in handy. However, you can’t compare it with smart loading. When labeling, write ‘this side up,’ ‘delicate,’ and ‘the room’s name in bold letters.’ This kind of labeling helps everyone involved with the move to handle boxes with care.

In addition, load your boxes last if possible. Ensure you keep them far away from heavy furniture. Avoid placing under packed appliances, books, or tools. You can use pillows or blankets to ensure your boxes don’t slide as they are being transported.

The bottom line is that packing fragile things requires patience. With these techniques, you can transport your things with fewer risks.
